As the Florida primaries come and go, and the mainstream media attention continues to rave about the John McCain presidency, I have to stop and ponder what that would actually mean. Since, we as republicans strive to "think for ourselves", I have made a list of reasons why John McCain would be the wrong choice for the Republican Party. I would like to offer up 5 points from my list.
1) The Keating Five
Crooked politicians doing crooked things. Sure, people can say, they were never charged with anything, only issued "questionable ethical conduct" statetments, but that is the same kind of argument that will get Barry Bonds into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
2) McCain- Kennedy
We as republicans cannot pretend to think that the lipservice we are being spewed in stump speeches by McCain and Co. is actually what he believes on immigration. I don't want to get personal, I just look at the records thus far. As a senator, he offered up legislation to grant amnesty to 20 some odd million non-americans, currently breaking the law. The New straight talk about securing the border first, is jibberish, and anyone that can keep an attention span for longer than about 3 weeks knows what John McCain's true position is on immigration.
3) McCain-Lieberman
In McCain's victory speech last night, he said,
"We believe government should do only those things we cannot do individually, to tax us no more than necessary, and spend no more than necessary, and then get out of the way of the most industrious, ingenious and optimistic people in the history of the world so that they can build an even greater country than the one they inherited."
Does this mean that we can't stop America Warming on our own and so the government must step in and regulate. Does this mean that when we drive American Companies overseas because of senseless and agenda driven regulations we are getting out of the way so that Americans can build an even greater country than the one they inherited? Again, lipservice does not match the actions that are being taken as senator, and so I find it hard to believe that as POTUS, he will stand for conservative principles and do what we as the Republican Party stand for.
4) McCain-Feingold
Free speech is the First Amendment for a reason. The fact that an incumbent is placed under increased scrutiny is part of the game. This is a bad idea, no matter how you look at it, and definitely not a conservative ideal. Again, actions speak louder than words, and McCain the senator tells me he will sell me out.
5) The Gang of 14
Way to unite the party by defying the party in preventing a filibuster of judicial nominees that were appointed by President Bush. I'm sure the spin is that McCain the senator knew what was best for the party, even more so than the president or almost half of the senate (save the gang of 14).
Bottom line, vistory speeches that invoke service as a POW will only get you protection from people like Matt Lewis and Michael Medved, that will nitpick at anyone that questions what he says by saying that somehow that must mean that we don't appreciate him as a Vet. There is more honorable than serving your country, POW or no POW. The problem is, and John Kerry found this out, is that once you get home, you are still responsible for your actions. John McCain has not shown me by his actions that he actually intends on uniting the party. I don't know if I will ever be convinced.
